Indoor vs. outdoor racing

Prepare for the very different speed, air, surface, launch, stopping, and event formats of warehouse courses, street hills, and permanent outdoor tracks.

Course shape changes which losses dominate.

A long, steep permanent hill builds more speed and makes wheel, alignment, steering, and aerodynamic losses increasingly expensive. A short indoor course may use a constructed ramp, lower terminal speed, tighter shutdown space, and a surface with seams or dust. The stopwatch still measures the entire system, but it weights each part differently.

OUTDOOR CHECKLIST

Treat weather and grade as setup data.

  • Walk the course only when officials permit and study crown, lane transitions, seams, braking markers, and runoff.
  • Record air temperature, surface temperature, wind direction, and meaningful gust changes with each test.
  • Keep the driver tucked and still, but prioritize a straight, controllable line in crosswind.
  • Dry and inspect the permitted components according to official procedure after moisture exposure; never improvise a wheel treatment.
  • Recheck geometry after hard braking, transport, or a large pavement strike.

INDOOR CHECKLIST

Short courses amplify launch and procedure.

  • Confirm the event is sanctioned and which class, wheel, weight, ramp, and inspection rules apply.
  • Practice a motionless gate posture and immediate neutral steering.
  • Inspect the transition from ramp to floor and protect legal ground clearance.
  • Keep tires, shoes, tools, and ballast from bringing debris onto the racing surface.
  • Know the exact shutdown and retrieval procedure before the first run.

A 2010 NDR-sanctioned indoor race in Sharon, Pennsylvania used a roughly 200-foot warehouse course and was reported as slower than street or permanent-track racing. It is a useful historical example, not a promise that every indoor format works the same way.

Do not create separate indoor and outdoor legality from racer habit. The event's published sanction, class rules, inspection sheet, and director control both.
