This is a coaching model, not a route for a specific track or lane. Officials, the surveyed surface, and supervised practice define the safe route and braking procedure.

THE DRIVER IS PART OF THE SETUP

Train repeatable control before interpreting car speed.

A fast chassis cannot rescue a changing start posture, a near-field stare, repeated steering sawing, or late braking. Build driver skill in short supervised drills, use the same language every run, and record the lane and available split times. Do not invent an ETA or a missing split.

OFFICIAL RULE / EVENT PROCEDURE

Non-negotiable

Helmet, attire, control demonstration, ramp procedure, lane boundary, finish, braking, and retrieval instructions come from the sanctioning body and race officials.

COACHING PRACTICE

Repeatable cue

Posture marks, far sight points, light steering-pressure language, route notes, split review, and driver-first debrief improve consistency without modifying the car.

Test a legal posture or route cue only after the driver can hold the baseline and the lane, wheel identities, and conditions are recorded.

THE SEVEN-DRILL COURSE

Do not combine cues until each skill is calm.

  1. Static controls. With the car restrained and an adult supervising, the racer identifies neutral, turns left and right without crossing hands or forcing the stops, applies the brake fully, and practices a safe exit.
  2. Start posture. Set hips, feet, hands, helmet, shoulders, and eyes at repeatable landmarks. Hold still through the release; the gate starts the car, not a body lunge.
  3. Sight line. Look through the lane toward a named far reference while retaining awareness of nearer marks. Do not stare at the nose, front wheel, or one crack.
  4. Steering pressure. Apply the smallest smooth pressure needed, then release toward neutral. Avoid sawing, a long held input, or chasing each painted mark.
  5. Route execution. Memorize one approved lane note with a start reference, transition window, settled line, finish reference, and braking cue. A different lane gets a separate note.
  6. Split awareness. After the run, compare where time changed: launch to split one, middle segment, late segment, or finish. The driver drives the line, not the clock display.
  7. Brake and debrief. Finish the run before sitting up or braking unless officials direct otherwise, stop through the required zone, then report feel and events before hearing the stopwatch.

Any loss of steering, brake response, visibility, helmet clearance, lane control, or driver confidence ends the speed exercise. Follow the official abort and stopping procedure; never coach a racer to save a time at the expense of control.

START POSTURE AND RELEASE

Stillness makes the first split readable.

SET

Five landmarks

Mark or photograph legal hips, feet, hands, helmet, and shoulder position. Confirm breathing, sight line, steering reach, brake reach, and no outside contact.

LOAD

Quiet hands

Use equal relaxed hand contact around neutral. Do not preload a turn unless the approved course plan explicitly calls for it.

RELEASE

Let the gate work

Hold posture as the gate falls. A head throw, shoulder push, or steering grab changes balance, aero, and the first segment together.

CHECK

Ask before timing

“Did your body stay on its marks?” comes before “Was it fast?” The driver can often identify movement that video or timing cannot.

Review gate stillness, steering at release, initial route, wheel start, and ramp procedure before changing tail weight or alignment.

Example: fast first split, unstable middle

The launch worked, but an early held correction or changing posture may have created later loss. Keep the start and train the transition separately.

SIGHT LINE AND STEERING PRESSURE

Aim far, feel small, return to neutral.

  1. Name a far target that stays visible and a nearer confirmation mark; both must be within the official lane and route plan.
  2. At the gate, eyes go to the far target. Use the nearer mark to confirm position, not as something to chase.
  3. Coach pressure, not wheel angle: “small left pressure,” “hold,” and “relax to neutral” are clearer than “turn more.”
  4. After one correction, wait for the car to respond. A second input before the first takes effect creates steering oscillation.
  5. Keep hands on the control and the head quiet. Do not lean to steer or look sideways at the opponent.

Coach language example

Before: “Do not hit the line.” Better: “Eyes at the far marker; one light left pressure at the transition mark; relax when the nose is settled.” Give one cue, then ask the racer to repeat it back.

WRITE A ROUTE NOTE FOR EACH LANE

A route is a sequence of references, not a sketch from memory.

Track cracks, crown, water flow, rust marks, paint, seams, bumps, and repairs belong in the scouting report. They become route evidence only after officials permit inspection and repeated runs support the note. Never tell a racer to cross a boundary or make an abrupt move to avoid a feature.

USE SPLITS, LANE, AND WHEELS

A finish number cannot show where the run changed.

Record every split the timing system actually provides, in course order, with the lane. Leave missing splits and final times blank. Preserve wheel identity at LF, RF, LR, and RR, the swap step, opponent or wheel source, weather, route version, and correction notes so a segment change is not credited to the wrong cause.

Run B reached split one slightly sooner but lost more in the next and final segments. That pattern supports reviewing the middle-route correction; it does not prove the driver caused every difference. Wheels, release, wind, lane surface, and timing spread remain possible contributors.

WHEEL IDENTITY THROUGH A 2-4-2 SWAP

Track the physical wheel and owner while preserving its designated corner.

The current ISBD progressive procedure can move two wheels, then all four, then a designated two. Every exchanged wheel stays in its same corner position: LF to LF, RF to RF, LR to LR, and RR to RR. A car can finish the heat with a different physical set than it started, but not with those wheels arbitrarily moved among corners. NDR procedures are separate; confirm the current event director's rule rather than importing the ISBD sequence.

  1. Label source identity outside only as the official rule permits. Use a stable ledger ID such as “Jordan Lee LF,” meaning the wheel came from Jordan Lee's original left-front position. Add the owner's team ID when needed to disambiguate names.
  2. Verify the corner instead of changing it. A wheel named “Jordan Lee LF” must be installed at LF on the receiving car throughout the official ISBD exchange. Keep source corner and observed current corner as separate ledger fields so a mismatch becomes visible.
  3. Capture each exchange. Record swap step 0, 2, 4, or final 2; from-car; to-car; source ID; required same-corner position; observed position; and the official who controlled the exchange.
  4. Photograph the four outside labels before and after. Do not mark the inside face, alter the wheel, or add anything beyond the current rule's identification allowance.
  5. Close the ledger after elimination. Your original wheels may continue on another car, including a finalist. Preserve their later result without crediting the wheel alone for the placing.

Mismatch red flag: if the wheel's source corner and observed current corner differ during an official ISBD 2/4/2 exchange, stop and ask the wheel-swap official to reconcile the set before the car proceeds. Do not quietly move, relabel, or treat the mismatch as an allowed custom rotation.

Example: your wheels reach the final after your racer is eliminated

Keep the source wheel IDs active in the ledger and attach later heat results to their receiving car while preserving LF at LF, RF at RF, LR at LR, and RR at RR. Report that those wheels were present; do not claim they caused the winning result because car, lane, driver, remaining wheels, route, and conditions also changed.

SAFE CORRECTIONS AND LINE DRILLS

Practice the response before race pressure.

DRILL 1

Neutral roll

On a sanctioned supervised practice course, hold the start posture and neutral steering. Debrief sight line and pressure without adding a route change.

DRILL 2

One cue

Add one named transition and one small pressure cue. The success test is a calm return to neutral, not a stopwatch win.

DRILL 3

Correction recovery

Coach “small pressure, wait, relax.” Never script a violent recovery. If control is uncertain, use the official safe-stop procedure.

DRILL 4

Full shutdown

Practice finish awareness, sitting up only when directed, progressive brake application, straight stop, and waiting for retrieval instructions.

DRILL 5

Lane change

Reset the route sheet for the new lane. Do not mirror a lane note automatically; crown, references, and surface may differ.

DRILL 6

Pressure rehearsal

Have the racer say the route, one coaching cue, brake cue, and abort rule before entering the ramp.

THE TWO-MINUTE DEBRIEF

Hear the driver before showing the time.

  1. Driver report: “What did the car do from release to first split, through the middle, and after the last split?”
  2. Control report: posture, sight line, steering inputs, return to neutral, vibration, wheel or body noise, and brake feel.
  3. Route report: actual path compared with the lane note; name the reference where it diverged.
  4. Evidence report: lane, available splits, finish if present, wheel map and swap step, weather, opponent, and video timestamp.
  5. One next cue: keep, remove, or change only one coaching instruction for the next run.

Good driver note

“Lane 3. Still at release. I used right pressure before the first reference, held it too long, then returned neutral. No vibration. Brake felt normal.”

Weak driver note

“It was slow.” Replace judgment with sequence: what happened, where, how many inputs, and what the car felt like.

Good coach decision

Keep the car unchanged. Repeat the same lane note with one shorter pressure cue and compare the same split segment.

Premature coach decision

Changing weight, alignment, wheels, route, and posture after one run destroys the evidence and overloads the racer.
